Volunteering
Several articles have been written about the benefits of volunteering. A growing body of research indicates that volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social benefits. Research has established a correlation between volunteering and its positive impact on our physical and emotional health, such as: those who volunteer live longer, have greater functional ability and lower rates of depression and heart disease later in life than those who do not volunteer. This research indicates that older adults are the most likely to receive greater benefits because it provides them with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose at a time when social roles are changing.

Here are 5 reasons why volunteering through sharing your time, energy and resources is good for your health:
  1. Reduces stress by giving us a sense of purpose, feeling like our contribution makes a difference. This feeling calms our center core of being. In addition, a person feels pride and energy in knowing that they have made a difference no matter how small or insignificant it may appear.
  2. Helps us to think positively, to maintain a positive self-image and feelings of calmness and enhanced self worth.
  3. Keeps us interested in life through exploring and learning in volunteer experiences. Build your confidence – learn new skills.
  4. Expands and contributes to the maintenance of a strong social network by interacting with other people who share our similar interests.
  5. Enriches our spiritual life by causing us to contemplate and explore from another perspective what gives meaning, value and purpose.
The holistic health benefits of volunteering will enrich your life: physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, mentally and vocationally. Research indicates that as little as two hours per week of volunteer activity is required to achieve a health benefit.
